Scott Shilling shows INSIDE EDITION's Megan Alexander the mold that was hiding in the walls of the house he bought.
Realtors told INSIDE EDITION that potential home owners make sure the neighbors aren't messy or noisy before buying.
Houses with older features, such as white kitchen appliances, will be a better deal.
Realtor Melissa DeSantis suggests using large formal dining rooms, which are out of fashion, as TV or family rooms. |
Scott Shilling thought he got a great deal when he bought a house in New Jersey, but the home had a dark secret. Lurking behind the walls was every homeowner's worst nightmare...toxic mold.
Talking with INSIDE EDITION, Shilling says he "absolutely" regrets buying the home.
In today's depressed real estate market there are some great deals out there, but there are also some homes you should avoid, no matter how low the price.
With the advice of some top real estate agents, INSIDE EDITION has a few helpful hints every potential homeowner should know before signing on the dotted line.
Judiann Echezabal is a realtor in Easton, Connecticut, and she tells buyers to generally steer clear of homes near schools. "It's always noisy," she says. "People want to sit in their backyard and relax."
Be sure to check out the neighbors. If they're messy or noisy, don't buy. There's a good chance they'll never leave.
However, to get a really great deal, there are some things you should overlook.
An older house can be a great deal if you're willing to overlook its dated features.
Homes with older kitchens and white appliances rather than modern stainless steel, typically sell at deep discounts. Melissa DeSantis of Keller-Williams Realty says, "[Realtors are] gonna knock anywhere from $25,000 to $75,000 off the price of the home."
Many older homes come with formal dining rooms, which are now out of style. But, don't let that be a turn off...instead consider the possibilities. DeSantis suggests using them as a TV room, a family room, or even a parlor.
These days, a little imagination can lead to a great deal.
