ABOUT FREEHOLD...
Freehold is located approximately 50 miles south of New York City, 60 miles northeast of Philadelphia and 20 miles from the Jersey Shore. Many residents of Freehold work in New York and commute to the city daily. Freehold consists of Freehold Township and Freehold Borough.
Freehold is one of the original townships of Monmouth County. It first settled in 1650 and has always been the county seat. Bruce Springsteen’s song “My Hometown” represents Freehold Borough – the town where he spent his childhood, the town that inspired many of his lyrics.
Visitors to Freehold can enjoy Freehold Raceway, the nation’s oldest and fastest daytime half-mile harness racing. Just down the street is The Freehold Raceway Mall, which just underwent a major expansion. A tour to downtown Freehold (Freehold Borough) is like a step back in time. You’ll find quaint Victorian homes and trendy dining spots and antique galleries. Many of the buildings along Main Street date back to the 1800’s. St. Peter’s Episcopal Church is the oldest building in Freehold, built in 1683. Freehold is a town as diverse as it is old.
Freehold Township Public school students in Kindergarten through eighth grade are educated by the Freehold Township Elementary and Middle Schools. Students in public school for grades 9-12 attend either Freehold Township High School or Freehold High School. High school students have the opportunity of going to Vocational Schools such as Biotechnology High School, High Technology High School and the Academy of Allied Health & Science which are part of the Monmouth County Vocational School District. Freehold Township is also home to the Contemporary Global Studies Learning Center that admits students from all over the Regional High School District.
Freehold Borough pre-K through 8 attend the Freehold Borough Schools. Students in public school for grades 9-12 attend Freehold High School, as part of the Freehold Regional High School District. Freehold Regional has a set of specialized learning programs, each one focusing on a certain topic and is for students who are talented in that topic and wish to study it in college.
